The Battle of Zenta

On the 11th of September 1697 occured the famous Battle of Zenta in which the Ottoman army suffered a heavy defeat from the Christian army which was led by Eugene of Savoy. The Ottomans reached Senta on the 10th of September where they immediately constructed a temporary bridge and began crossing the river. Savoy used the occupation and reduced readiness of the Ottoman forces to his advantage. He issued an attack against the enemy pallisades and in about two hours overpowered his enemy. With the Treaty of Karlovac that followed a halt was put to any further Ottoman conquests in Central Europe.

The Memorial Complex of the Battle of Zenta

The monument was initally made in honor of  Eugene of Savoy and was revealed in 1895 on the occassion of Emperor Francis I visit, on the site of the Battle of Zenta where the Ottoman bridge once stood. The crafting of the monument was carried out in the workshop of Janosh Fisher and Sons in Szeged. In 1991 the monument reached its current location and was expanded in 1997 into a memorial complex whereas the plan reveals the shape of ship in whish there is an icorporated belltower and an arc reminiscent of a broken Ottoman vessel. The designer of the memorial complex is architect Zoltan Valkay.
