Highway Belgrade-Zagreb, 106. kilometer from Belgrade
The memorial “Sremski Front” is a famous place of exceptional importance in Serbia. Оn the perforation of the Sremski front, on the highway from Belgrade to Zagreb, at the 106th kilometer from Belgrade, on the left side of the Bosut River, near the village Adaševci, the magnificent memorial complex „Sremski front“ has been built. It is a composition whose content continuously reminds all generations on one of the largest and most difficult, decisive battles of World War II.
The author of the memorial complex is architect Miroslav Krstonošić, sculptor Jovan Soldatović- he was in charge of the interior, and prof. Dr. Milan Sapundžić for the exterior decoration.
War operations on the Srem Front lasted from October 21, 1944, to April 13, 1945. The liberation of Zapadni Srem and Vinkovci was marked as their end.
The memorial dedicated to the Srem front was erected in 1988. It was built at the same time as the modern Belgrade-Zagreb highway.
It consists of three units:
- Assembly(Gathering place) with 70 vertical sub-walls in which plates with the names of all the units that participated in the battles on the Srem front and three reliefs showing the layout of Yugoslovenian and the enemy’s defense lines are embedded;
- Alley of honor, on which 15,000 names of fallen fighters of the Yugoslav, Red and Bulgarian armies are written; and
- The museum, which consists of a part with a permanent museum exhibit and a part in which a sculptural artistic composition depicting the horrors of war is presented – plaster sculptures made by Jovan Soldatović, which can be viewed with sound and light effects. Within the complex there is a gift shop that is open every day.
