Kralja Aleksandra 63, Srpska Crnja
The famous Serbian representative of romanticism, painter and writer Đura Jakšić, was born in Srpska Crnja, and his birthplace is today a valuable cultural monument.
The building was built in the thirties of the 19th century and is an example of a traditional Pannonian house. After the death of his father, the priest Dionysi, and Đura’s youngest brother, the house belonged to the village and changed its purpose. After the Second World War, a decision was made to turn it into a museum dedicated to this great man.
In 1956, it was placed under state protection as a cultural monument of great importance.
This house from the first half of the 19th century was built with two street windows, a porch entrance and an open porch with brick pillars, which follows the courtyard facade. Interventions were carried out on it during the last century – in 1961 and 1981, and protective works were carried out by the Provincial Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments from Novi Sad. A museum was opened in Đura Jakšić’s birthplace in 1980 in his honor – it exhibits high-quality reproductions of the paintings of this representative of romanticism, a selection of his poems and excerpts from short stories, as well as an ethnological collection. The museum also has a gallery where you can see the works of contemporary artists.
A little more than a decade ago, major conservation works were carried out: the dilapidated roof structure was replaced, new roof tiles were laid, moisture was remedied from the interior and exterior walls, and new plaster was applied. Even the setting of the memorial museum was changed and prints of the most famous paintings by Đura Jakšić were made.
