The First Serbian Reading Room

It was founded on 14 January 1842 by the archimandrite from Krusedol, Dimtrije Krestić. It was the first institution of its kind in Serbia, with a great historical and cultural importance. It is here where Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj wrote his first poem In 1848, Prolecno Jutro (A Spring Morning). During the First and the Second World War, the Reading Room was closed. However, it continued working in 1952. 

Currently, it is the main local library where many cultural events are held. The library has more than 35,000 books, as well as a valuable local history collection and an art collection. Out of the works of art, the collection of a well-known Serbian painter Vasa Eskicevic stands out.
