Bodjani Monastery

Manastirska 12, Bođani

Legend has it that a merchant from Dalmatia, named Bogdan, suddenly went blind during one of his travels, stopping to rest in Bačka, near the Danube. He washed himself at a nearby fountain, praying to the Mother of God for his sight, with a vow that if he was healed by the spring water, he would build a church on that spot.

The water was beneficial, so Bogdan turned to the Serbian nobleman Dmitri Jakšić to get him permission from the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus to build a monastery dedicated to the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the place of healing. It is about the monastery, named Bođani after Bogdan, which is the oldest and one of three in Bačka (the others are in Kovilje and Sombor). The Bođani Monastery is located between the village of the same name and Vajska, in the municipality of Bač.

Since 1478, when it was built, the monastery has been destroyed three times in wars and flooded twice. Monks fled to the moor and vineyards and built a wooden church, and later returned and rebuilt the monastery. The present-day monastery church was built in 1722 by Mihailo Temisvarlija from Szeged, at whose expense, during the time of Patriarch Arsenij the Fourth Jovanović Šakabenta, the monastery painting was also completed in 1737, which was done by the famous painter, zoographer, coppersmith and calligrapher Hristifor Žefarović
