Franciscan monastery

Maršala Tita 10, Bač

Franciscan monastery – located in the center of Bač; the complex consists of a monastery complex, in the shape of a square, with an inner courtyard and the Church of the Assumption of Mary. In 1169, in the very center of Bač, on the foundations of the old cathedral, the Crusader Order of St. The Tomb of Jerusalem builds its own monastery and church. Due to its dimensions and construction style, it is at the very top of Romanesque architecture. Five-sided apse, a combination of stone and brick, pillars with animal heads, gargoyles (water fountains) on the roof, enamelled panels. The interior was the type of an early Christian basilica – bare walls without plaster. Everything is the same as in Western Europe, and we find the same buildings in the Rhine Valley in Germany. The underground “claws” that give additional stability to the building confirm that it is really a Crusader building. No other medieval building in this area has such protruding feet. The foundations are over two meters wide, built of Roman red brick. Regular canons of St. The Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem had its prepository in Bac. “Canonicicruciferi” was their shorter name. As an order, they were created in the time of the Crusades and had a cross on their clothing, which is why they got the name “cruciferi”. To distinguish them from other crusaders, they had one large red cross with four smaller ones on a white mantle. In 1241, the Mongols-Tatars devastated the monastery. After that, until the end of the 13th century, a major renovation of the church and monastery was carried out, the entire building was additionally fortified. The church received a Gothic ceiling with arches made of hewn stone, and the remains of the Gothic arch can still be found in the corridor next to the church, which was painted with frescoes. A bell tower was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style and the monastery was turned into a fortress. During the archaeological excavations, it became visible that there was also a moat with water, additional walls and towers. At that time, cities and monasteries throughout Hungary were fortified.
