Archaeological site and Natural monument „Čarnok“

The road between Vrbas and Bačko Dobro Polje

Numerous archeological sites have been discovered in the area of the municipality of Vrbas, whose richness of finds and remanants of buildings indicate the continuity of settlement in this area from the Neolithic period to the present day. Archaeological site and Natural monument Čarnok is a fortified settlement – oppidum, which was founded by the Celtic tribe Scordisci in the 2nd century BC. It is located outside of village of Bačko Dobro Polje, 3 km south of Vrbas. This opidum of ellipsoidal shape, surrounded by a massive earthen rampart and moat, represents one of the best-preserved earthen fortifications in the Danube region and is categorized as a cultural monument of great importance. Archaeological excavations of this site have shown that Čarnok was a harvest collection centre for various types of cereals which were brought in from the surrounding areas. The collected cereals were dried in earthen ovens and stored in pitos and anphoras in silos located along the ramparts, while in the centre of the settlement there was a wheat market. Čarnok was an important trade centre until the 1st century AD, after which it gradually lost its strategic importance and was permanently abandoned.
