Glavna 182, Ruma
The building of the Ruma County Museum is under state protection, as an immovable cultural asset of great importance, it is the oldest and at the same time the first floor building in Ruma. It dates from 1772, and with the Roman Catholic church built in 1813 and the parish court from 1815, it forms a unique authentic urban-architectural ensemble of the city type. All three buildings of the endowment are of the Pejacevic family.
Exactly two and a half centuries have passed since that time, and the building is still in the service of education, culture and overall spiritual progress. During its long history, it met various school needs – it was an elementary, drawing, craft and music school. For the last six decades, it has housed the Museum, which has been the only user of this temporary building since 1986, when the music school was moved out.
The Museum in Ruma was founded by the decision of the People’s Committee of the Municipality of Ruma in 1962 under the name Native Museum Collection. Ten years later, in 1972, this museum institution changed its name to the Museum in Ruma, and in 1979 it got its current name.
According to its basic orientation, Ruma County Museum belongs to the category of native museum institutions of a complex type, which includes a department of archeological collections, a department of ethnological collections, a department of historical collections, a department of art collections and a documentation department with a library. The museum fund also includes 8 legacies, namely: the legacy of Milivoj Nikolajevic, the legacy of Dr. Roman Soretic, the legacy of Fedor Fedja Soretic, the legacy of Branislav Makes, the legacy of Branka Kolundzic, the legacy of Milan Besarabic, the legacy of Dr. Milan Micic and the legacy of Dragan Tomasevic. The Museum also has a closed professional library with a collection of about 4,500 items.
At the beginning of the 21st century, publishing and exhibition activities intensified. In addition to printing informative catalogs that accompany each museum exhibition, the Museum publishes monographic publications and the Collection of the Ruma County Museum, which first appeared in 1997.
The art colony “Borkovac” was founded in 1968, it is one of the oldest colonies in our country. The founder and initiator of the colony is Milivoj Nikolajević, the long-time manager of the Matica Srpska Gallery. Plaque with the character M. Nikolajević is awarded to the most successful author of the annual gatherings. So far, 48 convocations have been held. More than 250 fine artists took part. Until now, the Colony has had the status of an international manifestation seven times (participation of painters from abroad – Japan, Bulgaria, Russia, Croatia, Slovenia). The exhibition of works created at the Colony is a mandatory annual program of the Ruma County Museum, which is realized at the end of the year.
The museum collections were expanded and enriched with new items. Cooperation with related institutions in the country and abroad, with educational institutions in Ruma and the surrounding area, as well as with the media, was expanded, with a greater number of programs, this resulted in an increased number of visitors. During the first two decades of the 21st century, the Museum emphasized the improvement of technical and technological conditions.
As the crown of the above-mentioned activities, Ruma County Museum received the Mihajlo Valtrovic Award, for exceptional results in professional work achieved during 2017, which is awarded by the Museum Society of Serbia.
The Museum aims to be a favorite destination of residents of Ruma and Srem, as well as visitors from the country and abroad, who want to get to know this region. By presenting cultural heritage, material and immaterial, through museum materials, artifacts from the distant and recent past – archaeological, ethnological and artistic materials, the Museum communicates with professionals and the general public, actively contributing to the development of society.
