Studio Terra

Danila Kosića bb, Kikinda

Studio “Terra” is located in the former roof tile factory, the former “Pogon II” of IGM Toza Marković, a building of old industrial architecture built in 1895. The studio space was fully renovated in 2010, and today represents a unique workspace for artists. The total area of the studio workspace is 600 square meters. Studio is equipped according to the highest standards, and offers wide possibilities to its users. Special attention is drawn to the 2.5m high large kiln for firing the sculptures. With the usage of this kiln it is now possible for artists to make large format monolithic sculptures at that height and beyond. In addition to this kiln, six other kilns of different dimensions are in operation, as well as clay mills, clay press, pottery wheel and all tools and other equipment needed.

In 2021, by the decision of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the facility of the studio “Terra” was declared a cultural monument under the name “Monument of Culture – Old Tile and Brick Plant / Terra in Kikinda” as a technical culture facility that belongs to the industrial heritage.

Since 1982, when it was founded by the academic sculptor Slobodan Kojić, the “Terra” studio has been hosting the International Terracotta of Large-Scale Sculpture Symposium “Terra” every year from July 1st to July 31st. Five to eight artists from Serbia and abroad participate in the “Terra” symposium every year. When it comes to large-format terracotta sculpture and contemporary art, the “Terra” symposium is unique in the world. So far, over 250 sculptors have participated in the “Terra” symposium, whose works make up the world’s largest collection of terracotta sculptures, in the field of contemporary art, which includes over 1,000 works. Sculptures from the funds of the “Terra” symposium were exhibited at numerous exhibitions in many cities in Serbia and abroad. It is especially important to point out that in 1999, the works of artists from the “Terra” Symposium presented Yugoslav fine art at the 48th Biennale in Venice.

The largest part of the collection is permanently exhibited in the Terra Museum, while the rest is exhibited in the public space of the sculpture park within the cultural monument complex itself.
