National Museum of Kikinda is located in the former Magistrate of the Great Kikinda District (latin Curia), built in 1839. In the period until mid-twentieth century the building was a seat of court and prison.
The museum is founded in 1946.
History of the town since its foundation in 1751 through the most important historical dates and period of civil society formation is represented in the museum basic exhibition. Special attention is given to ethnology, tradition and customs, as well as to multiculturality. Settlements before the city formation are documented in archaeology records where the oldest evidence comes from the Stone Age.
Natural-history heritage is presented through an interesting collection of learning objects.
The most impressive object in the museum is Kikinda Mammoth, the original fossil remains accompanied with a 3D movie and a life size replica. Kikinda mammoth was found in the clay mine in the TozaMarkovic factory in 1996. Experts have determined that this is a kind of Mammoth Throgonterii – Steppe Mammoth, more than half a million years old.
Educational programs include a lot of different workshops based on basic and temporary exhibitions, summer and winter children camps, as well as family programs.
Mamutfest is the museum’s annual manifestation for children, that is held every second weekend in September with the purpose of promotion and popularization of keeping and using heritage. This birthday party marks anniversary ofKika’s discovery and represents the most successful programs realized for the youngest across the country and the region.
Special location outside the museum is Suvača mill that is the only preserved horse powered dry mill in Serbia. It was built in 1899 and worked until 1945. This kind of mill was characteristic forplains and Kikinda had more than 50 mills.
Plans for the future include a complete exhibition reconstruction in the aim of the museum transformation into dynamic institution of education, fun, challenge and inspiration.
The mission of the museum is National Museum of Kikinda as local community gathering and exchange of views centerthrough permanent education of the youngest with the purpose of conscience evolvent concerns the importance of keeping and using local heritage.
